INFORMATION

FontID: 06897YAU
Church/Chapel: [Parish Church?]
Country Name: Mexico
Location: Oaxaca
Font Location in Church: wall-mounted
Century and Period: , Pre-Columbian
Described and illustrated in Reyes-Valerio (2000: 303, and photo 98) as a "tepetlacalli" [=stone box] of pre-Columbian origin, recycled as a holy-water stoup in the Dominican cloister; R-V identifies the motifs on its front as "Nahui Ollin, Cuatro temblor o 4.Movimiento", representing the 'Fifth Sun' or 'Sun-in-motion' [="Quinto Sol", "Sol en Movimiento"], an important and complex Aztec concept. [NB: "pilas bautismales", probably of the 17th century, are reported in the Capilla de Santiago of Yautepec; not clear whether or not these (?) are other additional objects]. Probably the same object that Duverger (2003: 150) makes reference to as being decorated with three cartouches in line with staggered glyphs ["bénitier, à Yautepec, orné de trois cartouches alignés décorés du glyphe du quinconce"].
