Lewis' Dictionary of 1848 reports "a curious ancient font" in this church. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a noteworthy baptismal font of the Transitional period [i.e., 1150-1200. Described and illustrated in The Corpus of Romanesque Sculpture in Britain and Ireland [www.crsbi.ac.uk/ed/hu/upton/]: "a font in the form of a large, square double-scallop capital supported by a central shaft surrounded by eight thinner shafts with bases, moulded capitals and integral impost." The CRSBI dates the basin to "anywhere between c. 1140 and c. 1180", dates which match those in C&H above, and a later date for the base: "the entire supporting structure is 13th c." The CRSBI entry notes repairs to the upper basin side and rim, especially on the west side, and the presence of a lead lining. Noted in Pevsner (1968): "Font. A tremendous Norman piece like a two-scalloped capital. It stands on nine (renewed) E[arly[] E[nglish] supports."
