The Victoria County History (Hertford, vol. 3, 1912) notes: "The advowson of the old church of ST. MARY follows the descent of the advowson of Ware [...], to which church it was a chapel. Hugh de Grentmesnil gave both church and chapel to the Priory of Ware. [...] The old church was pulled down in 1853 on the erection of the church at Wadesmill. There was a chapel here in the time of Hugh de Grentmesnil, who was tenant in 1086 [...] The dedication is given variously as ALL SAINTS [...] and ST. MARY"; there is no font mentioned in the VCH entry for the old chapel, of which only the tower remains now.
