Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Overton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU5149/overton/] [accessed 15 August 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period here [cf. infra]. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "At the time of the Domesday Survey there were two churches in Overton, [...] representing respectively the parish church of Overton and the dependent chapel of Tadley [cf. Index entry]. [...] The altar table, font and other furniture are modern, but part of what may have been a 12th-century font, with interlacing work on the bowl, is now in the baptistery." The Guide to St. Mary's [www.stmarysoverton.org.uk/St Marys A4 Pamphlet 2009.pdf] mentions the present font: "2005 saw a major refurbishment of St Mary’s [...] The Victorian stone font was moved to a more prominent position at the front of the north aisle so that a larger proportion of the congregation can witness and participate in baptisms." [NB: Cox & Harvey's report of a 15th-century font appears to be a mistake, since by their time the Victorian font was already in place -- we have no information on the font from the pre-Conquest church mentioned in the VCH; we could not find mention of a church in the Domesday entry for this Overton].
