There are two entries for Silchester [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SU6261/silchester/] [accessed 25 March 2015], but neither mentions cleric or church in it. Hone (1827) notes: "The font is of an octagonal form, of plain stone". Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Decorated period. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 4, 1911) notes: "The font at the west end of the north aisle is of 15th-century workmanship; it is octagonal, and has a moulded base and bowl." The font consists of an octagonal with vertical sides, plain but for a moulding at the upper rim and at the lower end; graded underbowl chamfer; moulded octagonal stem and lower base. The wooden cover is octagonal and flat, with metal decoration and handle; appears modern, probably Victorian. [cf.
