There is an entry for Empshott [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU7531/empshott/] [accessed 19 June 2018], but it mentions neither priest nor church in it. White (1878) reports "a handsome rood-screen and a curious antique font, which were given by George Medecaulfe , in 1624" [NB: the 17th-century date applies to the cover only [cf. VCH infra]. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Early English period. The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "The chancel is the oldest part of the building, and was begun soon after 1200, the north-west chapel being contemporary with it. [...] The font is of Purbeck marble, with a square bowl ornamented with five shallow round-headed arches on each side, and carried on a central and four angle shafts. Its date is c. 1190. It has a wooden cover dated 1624." The Southern Life web site [http://southernlife.org.uk/empshott_church.htm] [accessed 15 June 2012] adds: "the carved font cover bears the date 1626 and the initials T.F. whose full name is not known." Noted in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble, without details [source given: The Revd. R. Tyler].
