There are three entries for Fairford [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP1501/fairford/] [accessed 13 July 2014], one of which reports a priest, a church and churchlands in it. The Gentleman's Magazine (issue of July-Dec, 1856: 98) reports that the Archaeological Institute received "an interesting portfolio of drawings of painted glass, sculptures, the font, and other details of Fairford, Gloucestershire" from a Miss Kymer. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. Noted in Verey & Brooks (1999-2002): "Octagonal late C15 font, with the usual quatrefoil decoration, the face towards the S[outh] door showing the Yorkist badge of the Sun in Splendour.". The font is octagonal with vertical sides, each deeply carved with a rosette in a quatrefoil window; moulded and piping on the underbowl chamfer; octagonal base of two volumes. Octagonal prismatic font cover, of oak. [NB: we have no information on the font of the Domesday-time church here].
