There are four entries for this Farnham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL4824/farnham/] [accessed 15 October 2015], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. Cox & Harvey (1907) list a baptismal font of the Norman period in this church. Bettley & Pevsner (2007) have: "Font. Mosaic base and cover by Geldart, 1909" [NB: E. Geldart was responsible for the restoration of 1890]. The Friends of Essex Churches Trust [www.foect.org.uk/church_of_the_month/churchofthemonth_st_mary_the_virgin_farnham.html] [accessed 15 October 2015] notes: "The font stands on six small shafts of Devon marble. [...] In 1909, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the church, the font was enriched by laying a floor of Italian mosaic around it, and by the addition of an oak lid and brass ewer, all designed by the Revd Ernest Geldart, formerly rector of Little Braxted". [NB: what source C&H used to account for the old font is not known; it must have been replaced during the 1890 restoration -- we have no information on the whereabouts of the Norman font] .
