Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Elmdon in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TL4639/elmdon/] [accessed 3 December 2014], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. A font here is listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period, but noted in the Royal Commission of Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) as "modern, except octagonal stop-chamfered base, c. 1400." The present font is indeed a composite object, with a plain octagonal basin raised on an octagonal-to-square base, and is located in one of the western arches of the arcade that separates the nave from the south aisle, near the south door. It is unlikely that the modern basin was a re-cut from an earlier font [error in Cox & Harvey?].
