There are three entries for Aveley in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ5680/aveley/] [accessed 14 May 2018], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. There is a 1876 watercolour illustration of this font [by A.B. Bamfortd?] in the Bamford Collection [ref. no. I/Ba 2/2] , in the Essex Archives Online [http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/result_details.asp?DocID=299655] [accessed 10 June 2010]. The V&A National Photographic Record and Survey [http://images.vam.ac.uk/item/O50092/photograph-national-photographic-record-and-survey/] [accessed 10 June 2010] has a 1906 B&W photograph by George Scamell [ref. E 1997-2000 -- Prints & Drawings Study Room, room 512M, case MX18, box 12] that shows the font in the context of the west end of the nave. Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: square bowl with four shallow round-headed panels on each face, cylindrical stem with a small detached shaft at each angle, late 12th-century." Described as a Norman font made of Purbeck marble in Kelly's Directory of Essex, 1933. Noted in Pevsner (1976): "Font. C12, the Purbeck type often met with: square bowl decorated with shallow blank arches; five supports." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 8, 1983) dates the font to the late 12th century. In Bettley & Pevsner (2007). The RCHM (ibid.) inventories a holy-water stoup as well: "In nave--W. of N. doorway, round bowl with triangular brick head, early 16th-century." [no separate entry in this Index]
