There are three entries for this Fyfield in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL5706/fyfield/] [accessed 1 June 2015], neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. A font here is described in Cox & Harvey (1907): "The large square Norman font of grey marble [...] is well carved; it is engraved by Suckling" [NB: the reference is to Alfred Inigo Suckling, 1796-1856, who published a number of engravings of baptismal fonts in his "Suckling Papers"]. Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: With square and slightly tapering bowl of Purbeck marble, sides carved on E. and N. with a fleur-de-lis and two quatrefoil leaves and on W. and S. shallow round-headed panels, octagonal stem and square base, 12th-century." The VCH (Essex, vol. 4, 1956) reports: "The square bowl of Purbeck marble is of the late 12th century [...] Two of the sides are decorated with recessed arcading and the other two have a central fleur-de-lis flanked by vine leaves", and adds: "there are similar bowls at Moreton, Little Laver, and Norton Mandeville." Noted in Pevsner (1976) and in Bettley & Pevsner (2007): "Font. Square, of Purbeck marble, late C12, with the familiar motif of a row of (six) shallow blank round-headed arches on two sides, and on the two others a row of three fleurs-de-lis." Noted in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble: "bowl with two panels on two adjacent faces and fleur-de-lys and two quatrefoil leaves on the others; the stem is octagonal" [source given: RCHM C&SW), 1921].
