Font Notes:
Mee (1939) describes this object not as a holy-water stoup but: "On one of the windowsills we found an old stone of thrilling interest, for it was one of the ancient cresset stones, used as lamps in olden times. In this block of stone four cups were hollowed out for oil, and in each cup a wick burned." Whereas another source claims "The water stoup exhibited on the window sill was once fitted into the wall of Coombe Keynes church" [www.bath.ac.uk/~lismd/dorset/wool/church-guide.html]. [NB: there are actually two objects kept in this church: an old cresset, square and with four round holes for the oil lights, and a stoup designed to have the back built into a wall. Both these objects are illustrated in the Parish website [http://www.holyroodwool.org/Main/tour.htm] [accessed 27 April 2010]]
