There is an entry for Hooke [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/ST5300/hooke/] [accessed 12 November 2018] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874) notes: "The font is Perpendicular, ornamented with quatrefoils." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Perpendicular period. In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Hexagonal, Perp[endicular], with quatrefoils and six-corner stars." An Inventory of the Historical Monuments in Dorset (vol. 1, 1952) gives the date of the fabric of the church as mainly 15th-century, and notes: "Font: elongated hexagonal bowl, set against wall, outer faces with panels enclosing six-pointed figures or quatre-foiled panels enclosing paterae, one similar panel on two diagonal sides towards wall, cylindrical stem with moulded capital and base, 15th-century." The stone font is dated 15th-century in the Dorset web site [www.thedorsetpage.com].. The basin of this font is quite rare; besides being hexagonal, not a common shape in fonts, two of the sides are much narrower than the other four, which gives an odd elongated shape to the irregular polygon.
