There is an entry for this Preston [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/ST9304/preston/] [accessed 19 February 2023]; despite its name "Prestetune" it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874) notes: "The font has a square Norman bowl of Purbeck marble, supported by a Perpendicular stem." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Holmes (1922) reports "the ancient font" as well as a holy-water stoup [no date] in this church [NB: this church is described in Holmes as "Perpendicular church with a Norman door" -- it is not clear whether or not the stoup belongs to either period, therefore not listed in this Index]. Listed in Long (1923) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Mee (1939) notes: "The bowl of the font is Norman." In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Purbeck, C13, square with tapering sides, and the familiar four blank arches each side." Noted in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble [no details] [source given: Dr. G. Dru Drury].
