Zoblitz / Zöblitz / Zoeblitz

Early 17th-century baptismal font made of the Zöblitzer serpentine stone, a.k.a. zeblicius marble. The font is made of a black variety of this marble. The basin is hemispheric but with an octagonal upper rim; the stem of the base is baluster-shaped; the wider plinth is octagonal [described and illustrated in www.serpentin.de]. This same font is described in [https://www.stadtkirche-zöblitz.de/taufstein.htm] [accessed 11 May 2025] as a font made of a single block of serpentine weighing 1500 kg by master Georg Trübenbach; the wooden cover is from 1904. The baptismal dish used with the serpentine font is described in the German Wikipedia entry for this church [https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stadtkirche_Zöblitz] [accessed 11 May 2025] as a pewter dish from 1614, featuring cast relief heads of Christ and the Evangelists, as well as the Taming of the Animals by Orpheus: "Der Taufstein [sic] aus dem Jahr 1616 ist mit einem zinnernen Taufbecken von 1614 ausgestattet, das gegossene Reliefköpfe von Christus und den Evangelisten sowie die Bezähmung der Tiere durch Orpheus zeigt."
