Font Notes:
Harrison (1920) reports a large cup-shaped Norman font in this church. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953) notes: "The church of Lodsworth was from early times a chapel attached to the church of Easebourne [...] The font is circular on a round stem with hexagon foot, apparently modern." The VCH entry for this church (ibid.) remarks on medieval details of the building (a single-light window of the south transept in Norman style, the 14th-century tower, etc.) Not listed in Whiteman (1994). The CRSBI (2008) reports and illustrates this font: "The church contains a plain font [...] Plain, tapering, lead-lined font on cylindrical stem and plinth, the whole raised on a wider polygonal plinth. A broad, hollow chamfer makes the transition between bowl and stem, and the top of the cylindrical plinth has a plain chamfer. The surface is heavily chiselled. [...] The VCH declared the font 'apparently modern' while Mee thought it 'Norman'." The Sussex Parish Churches entry for this church [ww.sussexparishchurches.org/content/view/461/33/] [accessed 31 August 2012] has: "Plain round retooled bowl with a hollow-chamfered underside, probably originally C12, though shallower than most. The stem and base are C19." This same source report a medieval stoup by the west doorway): "Broken C14; the doorway is off-centre to allow for it." [NB: the shallowness of the inner well of the basin might be explained if the basin itself had been cut as well as re-tooled].
