They are part of a series painted by monks from Lewes Priory [...] have been described as some of the most important in the country [...] some of the oldest surviving murals in England,[...] although their age is not known for certain. Historians have variously dated them to the 11th century,[...] c. 1080,[...] between 1080 and 1120,[...] c. 1100,[...] "later than 1125",[...] c. 1140,[...] c. 1150[...] or late 12th century" [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_John_the_Baptist%27s_Church,_Clayton] [accessed 7 November 2012]
Harrison (1920) reports a "base of Saxon font" in the churchyard. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 7, 1940) notes: "The nave and probably part of the chancel, with the chancel-arch, are of pre-Conquest date: as may be also the north doorway to the nave. [...] The font and other furniture are modern. [...] In the churchyard lies a large round stone, 3 ft. 8 in. diameter and about 11 in. thick, pierced through the centre, reputed to be the base of an early font." [NB: the size of the stone suggests it could be a plinth]. Not listed in Whiteman (1994). The modern font is of the classical Perpendicular design, the cusped quatrefoiled panels on the octagonal basin sides inscribing floral motifs; octagonal pedestal base with trefoiled niches, and moulded lower base and small plinth, both octagonal as well. The wooden cover is a modern version of the traditional Jacobean design, an octagonal box platform with four vertical scroll ribs meeting at a central pivot and round finial. [NB: we have no recent confirmation of the whereabouts of the base that was reported in the churchyard ca. 1940].
