Noted in Grayling (1918): "The font appears to be of the thirteenth century ; its lead lining has an indent of the cross fylfot, or potent repotent." The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 7, 1940) notes: "The advowson of the church and rectory of Twineham has always belonged to the lords of the manor of Twineham Benfield. In 1336 and 1339, when it is referred to as the chapel of Twineham, presentation was made by the Crown [...] The [present] church was built in the first or second decade of the 16th century, probably on the site of an earlier building. [...] The font is octagonal with hollow chamfers to the underside of the bowl and to the base: it is probably of the 14th century." The interior plan in the VCH entry for this parish shows the location of the font within the church. Described in Whiteman (1994) as a 13th-century baptismal font with a Jacobean font cover. The Britannia web site reports that the font "shows repair marks where there were once staples to lock the Holy Water in the font".
