Drawing of a font in the Harvey Pridham Drawings of English Fonts (MS 56). [Folder Number, Item Description]. University of Colorado at Boulder Libraries. Special Collections Dept., done by Harvey Pridham in December 1888 accompanied by the following description: "All square, - freestone. Circular bowl inside, lead lined, vertical sides, curved plan, 11 inches deep. 4 inch margin; flat modern cover. Position, at crossing of aisle door walk with that of nave, - at S. W. angle." Noted in Harrison (1920): "Font, plain square, similar to that at Kingston-by-Sea." Described in Whiteman (1994) as a square font from the 13th century. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 6, pt. 1, 1980) notes: "A church was recorded in 1086 on the estate which appears to have been Southwick, though called Kingston. [...] It was presumably a dependency of Kingston church [i.e., Kingston by Sea] [...] The tower [...] has been said to be Saxon, but most of its fabric is of the 12th century or early 13th. It was built against the older west end of the former nave, which was probably of the 11th century." There is no mention of a font in the VCH entry for this church. The CRSBI (2008) reports: "The plain square font is probably 13thc. in date".
