Scene Description: NB: the old spire visible here in this 1789 watercolour was, according to Arnold (1864: 62) removed in 1800, but re-built when the church was restored. It was still up ca. 1828-30, as seen in J.M.W. Turner's painting [ww.tate.org.uk/art/artworks/turner-a-church-spire-possibly-petworth-sussex-d25427] [accessed 13 April 2013].The spire was removed by (in?) 1947, as a Frith postcard [www.gravelroots.net/history/storepetworth2/571_712462.jpg] [accessed 13 April 2013] shows.

There is an entry for Petworth in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/] [accessed 13 September 2016]; it mentions a church in it. Arnold (1864) does not mention the font in this church, but gives an account of the building, removal and re-building of the noted spire of the church tower. Harrison (1920), who does not mention the font here either; he writes: "Restored in 1827, 1899, and 1904. This large church has some traces of the original work in the arches of nave (13th c), and the windows on N. nave (12th c)." Described in Whiteman (1994): "Under the tower is the 14th-century font, octagonal and carved with quatrefoils". [NB: we have no information on the font of the Domesday-time church here]. The font at the Sacred Heart (RC) church is modern, of neo-Gothic design.
