Century and Period: 11th - 13th century, Norman / Early English?
Noted and illustrated with a drawing in Andre (1901) as a lead-lined square baptismal font made of 'Sussex marble' [i.e., a local limestone] located at the west end of the nave. Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as one of the most interesting of the twenty-nine baptismal fonts of the Norman period in this county that have square bowls. Described in Whiteman (1994: 45): "The square Norman font, one side set into the W wall, is carved with round-headed arches". Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008), where the measurements of the the basin (65 x 67 cm) show it is not quite square. [cf.
