Described and illustrated in Uranga Galdiano (1943) with date in the 14th century. Described and illustrated in the Catálogo Monumental de Navarra (1990?- ) and in Domeño (1992): square mounted baptismal font of the Gothic period; the square (inside and out) basin has the sides ornamented with lobular and arch low reliefs; the front side has a centre panel has a six-lobe inscribed in a circle; in its centre, an Agnus Dei with banner; the left and right panels of the sides are narrower and contain five-lobes inscribed in a circle, above a double trefoil arch; the other sides have a pair of quatrefoil motif inscribed in circles, with eight-petal rosettes in the centre. The upper rim shows indentation for the lid hinges. There is an insert in the basin well, but it appears to be a later addition. The base is made of two quadrangular volumes, the lower slightly wider than the upper. García de Castro Valdés (2000) notes medieval quadrangular fonts in Spain at Beloncio, Bullaso, San Isidoro de Leon, Villanueva de Valdecarzana (suggested date in the 11th century); Armentia, Bustasur, Dosante, Gormaz, Quinanillabon, Rosales, Santillan del Agua, Soto de Bureba (suggested date in the 12th or 13th century); Ripodas and Turrillas (suggested date in the 13th century). [The CMdeN mentions a holy-water stoup, also with a square basin, by the door, south side, but no date or aother particulars -- not included in this Index -- the only stoup we have been able to located is one consisting of a round bowl on a slender columnar base, located near the entranceway]. Noted and illustrated in Simeón Hidalgo Valencia (15-04-2013) blog article on this font [http://simeonhidalgo.over-blog.com/article-la-pila-bautismal-de-turrillas-117107497.html] [accessed 2 January 2015].
