Workshop/Group/Artisan: Westphalian cylinder font
Church Notes: original church ca. 1250?; modified cqa. 1500; restored 1960-1962
Lübke (1870) suggests that this font belongs "to the transition style of the thirteenth century". Noted in Roosval (1918) as a font of the Gothic period decorated with an Ogee arcade; Roosval (ibid.) comments on the unfortunate restoration of this font. Described and illustrated in Bolege-Vieweg (1998) as a tub-shaped baptismal font of the mid-14th century [NB: Bolege-Vieweg may have dated the font so late on account of the re-carved surfaces -- cf. infra]. The font is roughly cylindrical in shape and ornamented with an arcade of six Gothic arches that contain figures and scenes from the life of Christ: Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, Annunciation, Crucifixion; the Annunciation occupies two arches (Gabriel - Mary); the Crucifixion is spread over three arches (Mary - Christ on the cross - John); the Baptism of Christ is fitted in a single arch. On-site notes: the font appears to have been re-carved in the restoration mentioned in Roosval above, to the point that it is difficult to get a sense as to what the original was like; the lower base is a modern replacement; a fixed glass covering did not allow us access to the interior for measurements; the statue of Mary in the Annunciation has lost her nose; a painted vine on the chancel wall resembles the vine on the font sides at Freckenhorst; there is no cover present.
