Church Notes: "Stave" church; original church mid-12thC (ca. 1163?), documented by 1327; expanded late-17th or early 18thC; restored 1902;
The font cover of this "stave" church is described and illustrated in Blindheim (1965: 38 and fig. 157); it is a high conical cover topped with a knob finial; below it, "a knot at the top and four dragons running down from this point. The intervals are filled with plant ornamentation." Noted in Norges Kikrker [www.norgeskirker.no/wiki/Hedalen_stavkirke] [accessed 13 November 2016] with reference to Solhaug (kat.nr. 56), soapstone Romanesque font of the "Gudbrandsdalstype"; consisting of a hemispherical basin with a patterned upper side ; the motif is zig-zag framed in a rectangle, with a patern of flat rins around the sides and underbowl; metal reinforcement ring around the upper rim; large drain holes in the bottom and the side; raised on a stem decorated with a pattern similar to the one noted at the upper basin sides but in a larger format, and a lower base with graded moulding. Patches of red paint on the font. Large drain holes in the bottom and the side. The font cover in Hohler (Kat. nr.. 66) with possible date in the mid-13th century; tall conical lid with three panels separated by mouldings carved in the shape of descending dragons; foliage including palmettes decorates the panels; measurements of the cover in Hohler (ibid.): 96 cm tall, with diameter of 66 cm. The font itself appears as a hemispherical basin ornamented with large flat ribs and a variation of what looks like zig-zag in a square at the upper rim side; it is mounted on a round pedestal base the upper part of which has the same motif as the upper basin side, while the lower base has a graded moulding pattern. The wooden cover is provided with two large ring handles.
