Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as the surviving fragments of an old baptismal font from this church. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953) notes: "In 1776 the font was of the usual 12th-century form; [...] it has now been replaced by a somewhat florid piece of modern work in the Decorated style." The entry is footnoted: "Add. MS. 5699, fol. 147." The VCH plan of the church interior shows a font located at the west end of the nave, obviously the replacement font. The modern font is described in the British Listed Buildings database [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-297555-church-of-st-mary-magdalene-bognor-regis]: "The font of 1898 is a replacement of a 12th-century one and has a round bowl with rich carving in a free Decorated style." The Parish web site [www.southbersted.org.uk/history.htm] [accessed 24 September 2012] notes: "The current font, from 1898, replaced one from the 13th century. Its oak cover with wrought iron handles was presented by Sunday School teachers and children in 1900. Fragments of an old font, possibly from an earlier church, can also be seen." The fragments are noted and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008): "The remains of a Sussex marble font of standard Sussex type (square arcaded bowl on five shafts on moulded base/plinth) lie at the W end of the nave. [...] The font can be dated to the late 12thc."
