No entry for this Neland found in the Domesday survey. Noake (1868) reports "a gorgeous church" built in the mid-19th century, and "the only relic transferred to the new church is a small circular Norman font, which is said to have belonged to the parish of Malvern before the Reformation". Miller (1890) writes: "This was a chapelry of Great Malvern. The old church, a timbered building of considerable interest, was taken down in 1864, when the new church and almshouses were built, John, the third Earl Beauchamp, having left £60,000 for the purpose". The Victoria County History (Worcester, vol. 4, 1924) entry for Great Malvern with Newland writes: "The original parish church of Gt. Malvern], built some time before 1269, [...] was dedicated to the honour of St. Thomas the Martyr [...] and stood at the north-west corner of the present churchyard [...] About 1541 [...] St. Thomas's Church was [...] destroyed, its goods removed and its font taken to the chapel at Newland, [...] where it is still preserved. [...] The font has a circular bowl, probably of the 13th century, and modern stem." On the original church at Newland, the VCH (ibid.) notes: "The old church of ST. LEONARD at Newland was an interesting timber and plaster building [...] The building belonged probably to the 15th century, though locally an earlier date is claimed for it. [...] When the trustees of the Beauchamp charity purchased the advowson of Newland they were required to repair or rebuild the parish church at the expense of the charity. They accordingly pulled down the old building in 1864 and erected a new church on a different site, adjoining the almshouses. The site of the altar of the old church is now marked by a stone cross erected in 1866, and the graveyard is still used". Tyrrell-Green (1928) reports a font at Newland that had been cast out of the church but later recovered and restored to its original use. Brooks & Pevsner (2007) note the basin "c. 1200" and a "marble base by Hardwick" [i.e., Philip Charles Hardwick, architect responsible for the 1860s renovation of the church]. Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2014) as a Romanesque baptismal font, "cylindrical, of red sandstone, with a band of chip-carved stars at the rim. Set on a modern stem and base". The CRSBI [ibid.) informs that "The VCH dates the font to the 12thc. Pevsner (1968) describes it Early English, and the band of ornament as 'dog-tooth;'. The font belonged to the original parish church of Great Malvern, St Thomas's, and was brought to Newland in 1541 when Great Malvern Priory became the parish church." Noake (1848) visiting Great Malvern in the mid-19th century, reported a font dated to a recent renovation of its church. [NB: we have no information on the original font of the pre-1269 church here]
