Described in the Guide to the Architectural Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Oxford (1846): "The Font is plain and rude, the plug and chain remaining". Noted in Kelly's Oxford Directory of 1911 [www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/d.asp] [accessed 30 June 2007]: "plain font" [NB: the full text in Kelly's reads: "there is a plain font and some benches, dated 1632", but the 1632 date applies only to the benches. The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 5, 1957) notes: "Oseney Abbey probably rebuilt the church of St. James after acquiring it in 1149. The oldest parts of the present church [...] are late-12th-century [...] The font is of the 12th or 13th century, on a modern base. [...] In 1864–5 it was enlarged and restored by G. E. Street [...] a new font pedestal, and new marble reredos added." On-site notes: the font consists of a plain cylindrical basin raised on a two-volume cylindrical base designed in the old style, slightly wider than the basin itself, but it is Victorian; of the same period is probably the round wooden cover with finial orb-and-cross [the local people informed that the original cross of the finial was made of brass but was broken from the orb and/or stolen; the tiny replacement is made of wood and held down with plasticine]; the basin has had repairs made to the upper rim, the damage probably resulting from the removal of the original metal staples of the cover; the repair is not recent.
