There is an entry for this Chesterton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP5621/chesterton/] [accessed 23 June 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. The Guide to the Architectural Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Oxford (1846) notes a baptismal font "plain round Norman" in this church. Noted in Kelly's Oxford Directory of 1911: "the font, which is surrounded by Jacobean altar rails, is Norman, plain and cylindrical, and has a singular iron canopy". The Victoria County History (Oxford, vol. 5, 1959) notes: "The earliest evidence for the existence of a church at Chesterton dates from the grant of its tithes to Bec Abbey in Normandy probably in 1087. […] A priest, Osmund the clerk, and his son are mentioned in a mid-12th-century charter, […] and architectural evidence indicates that the church was rebuilt in that century […] The plain 12th-century font, surrounded by Jacobean altar rails, is cylindrical, and has an elaborate wrought-iron framework for lifting the lid." In Sherwood & Pevsner (1974): "Font. C12, Plain, cylindrical, with an elaborate framework for lifting the cover, probably C18." Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2016): "A plain cylindrical limestone font with a modern chamfered cylindrical base. Located at the W end of the nave (tower) in the NW corner. Lead lined, with the lead extending over on to the outer surface, where it is cut into a pattern like a lace doily. No damage visible. It has a wrought-iron framework for lifting the lid."
