view of church exterior - south view
Scene Description: A rare surviving photograph of Hults gamla kyrkan; the new church was built in 1841, and local sources claim that the old church had been abandoned and much vandalised, and was demolished at the time, therefore the photograph must be of the early 1840s.

Listed in Gotthard Johansson (1925) as a baptismal font of the "Juredagruppen". Noted in Blomqvist (1929) in his chapter on the 'Njudungsmästarens posthuma verkstad' as one of many baptismal fonts in this group. Inventoried and illustrated in Borg (2002) as a baptismal font made of sandstone between 1170 and 1220, in the "Njudungsgruppen Variant 1". Listed in Drake (2002: 183) as one of several baptismal fonts "[a]ttributed to the Bestiarius workshop but not verified". Noted and illustrated in The SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [http://medeltidbild.historiska.se/medeltidbild/visa/foremal.asp?objektid=910706F1&g=1] [accessed 23 June 2014] as a sandstone baptismal font of the 'Njudungsgruppen', decorated with an arcade containing six mythical creatures; date in the late 12th century; slightly weathered; damaged base; paint on the basin. The arrangement of the six animals is quite similar to the one on the font at Södra Soberga, as is the arcade made of beaded tape, with simplified capitals; the spandrels are filled with foliage motifs; the font has also a similar underbowl to the one at Södra Soberga; the base here is of the type found on some Gotland fonts, on which two levels of very broad rope moulding is set with a set of fours heads each; the heads are human and animal, some very plain and mask-like, whereas others, animal or human, have distinguishable features.
