The Ave Maria Runic inscription on this font is transcribed into Latin in an illustration of the basin by Per Gustaf Vistrand in May 1880. The inscription is mentioned in Erik Ålund's Runorna i norden: en kortfattad redogörelse för våra förfäders äldstra skrift (Stockholm: P.A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag, 1904): 69: "På flera dopfuntar finnas runinskrifter, antingen på latin, såsom hela Ave Maria å en dopfunt från Pjätteryd i Småland m. fl., eller på moders- målet." The font with the illustrated included is illustrated in a drawing in J.G.. Liljegren and Carl Georg Brunius' Nordiska ornlemningar, (Zacharias Haeggström, 1823): Bd. 1: 4-10, at which point the basin appears whole and raised on a conical pedestal base decorated with two roll mouldings. Noted and illustrated in Blomqvist (1929) as a font attributed to "Bestiarius efterföljd". Noted in Nordström (1984). Inventoried and illustrated in Borg (2002) as a baptismal font basin made of sandstone ca. 1200; though badly damaged it retailns a Runic inscription with a part text of the Annunciation, and remains of an arcade containing a rampant lion and three floral motifs, the rest of the arcade and its motifs broken off. Listed as a baptismal font of the Bestiarius workshop (variant group) in Drake (2002: 183). Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 910617F1] as a basin of a baptismal font made of sandstone in the 13th century; the SHM entry mentions Blomqvist's attribution to Bestiarius but does not endorse it. [NB: Borg's illustration shows a central drain in the basin but a 1927 photograph [cf. ImageFileNo. 0220411013 in ImagesArea] showing fully the underbowl shows no exit hole at the bottom; blocked? no drain?]
