Church Notes: the present church of 1862 is said to be the 4th in Hemsjö; it was built about 1 km west of the site of the medieval church
Described and illustrated by Ellen Fryklund in Roosval (1917) as a basin bearing a running Runic inscription between two parallel grooves all around; it was in the SHM since 1868. Noted and illustrated in the SHM’s database Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 950925F2] as a non-established group font made of amphibolite or diorite in the 13th century; the font consists of a roughly hemispherical basin with an inscription of large Runic characters all around, and a moulding at the bottom of the underbowl; the base, which has a similar, though smaller, moulding atop, has lost most of its lower area to the point that it is impossible to say whether it is round or square, and the basin is propped up by a modern metal structure. Listed as a baptismal font of the Bestiarius workshop (variant group) in Drake (2002: 183). Runic inscription recorded and translated in Jansson (1987: 170-171). [NB: the font was returned from the SHM to Hemsjö parish church in 2005]. There are two modern fonts in this church: one, probably of the time of the new church, ca. 1862, made of metal; another, made of Italian walnut wood in 1957.
