Church Notes: this church is said to have been built on the site of a pre-Conquest church
There are two entries for Lewes in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TQ4110/lewes/] [accessed 26 September 2014], but neither mentions a church or cleric in it. Descrbed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as one of several baptismal font that "were once cast out [but] have been in recent times recovered and restored to their sacred use". The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 7, 1940) notes the late-19th century Church of All Saints at Plumpton Green, (Plumpton, East Sussex) and adds: "The font is said to have come from St. John-sub-Castro, Lewes."
