There is an entry for Prittlewell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ8786/prittlewell/] [accessed 1 January 2022]; it reports a church in it. Benton (1867-1888) writes: "The font, of debased work, is an octagon 2 feet 7in. across, upon a shaft 13 1/2 in. square, and stands upon an octagon step. Six of the sides which are concave, have square sunk panels, containing a mutilated representation of the crucifixion, Tudor roses, half rose, a chevron between three fleurs de lis and two spears in saltire transfixing a heart. One of the panels contains the badges of England and Arragon [sic], the rose and pomegranate [...] dimidiated and grafted, which probably denotes the period of its execution, either at the marriage of Prince Arthur with Catherine of Arragon [sic], or that of his brother Henry, subsequently, with the same Princess." Benton (ibid.) further adds, that the Crucifixion scene on the panel of the basin was probably mutilated as a result of the 28 August 1643 Lords and Commons order. Benton (ibid.) also notes that the promegranate branch had been assumed by Enrique IV of Castile as a symbol of his intent to conquer Granada. In his description of the church at nearby Leigh [Leigh-on-Sea?], Benton (1867-1888) reports a copy of the font at Prittwell made for the church at Leigh, which "has on one of its panels the badge of England and Arragon [sic], the rose and pomegranate grafted, which denoted the period of its execution". Geldart (1899) notes and illustrates two of the floral motifs on this font, which he dates to the late-15th century. Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as the basin of an early baptismal font "with concave sides and octagonal in plan"; T-G (ibid.) describes this font and the one at North Farmbridge [cf. Index entry with illustration] as "handsome". Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: octagonal bowl with concave panelled faces, six carved with, a rose (twice), a heart with two crossed spears, a shield with a cheveron between three fleurs-de-lis, a defaced crucifix and a dimidiated Tudor rose and pomegranate, square stem with attached shafts at angles having moulded bases, early 16th-century." In Pevsner (1976): "Font. Perp[endicular], octagonal, with concave sides with roses, crossed spears, etc." Much the same in the Bettley & Pevsner ed. (2007). The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TQ8768286822] notes: "The church goes back to Saxon times and it is mentioned in Doomsday Book. In the north wall of the chancel there is the remains of a C7 Saxon arch with Roman brick voussoirs. The north wall of the nave and chancel is of the early C12 [...] There is a C16 octagonal font with concave sides ornamented with roses and crossed spears." The RCHM (ibid.) inventories also a damaged holy-water stoup of ca. 1500, in the south porch [no separate entry in this Index]
