Hussey (1852) has: "The font in this church is circular. (Dallaway)" [NB: did Dallaway and/or Hussey see another font? or, was it just an error?]. Harrison (1920) reports a font of the Early English period in this church, but does not mention its shape. Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a good specimen from a group of fonts "characteristic of the Norman period in architecture", "consisting of a rectangular bowl upon a large central shaft, with four slender supporting shafts at the angles"; ornamented with fleur-de-lys (on the basin sides); T-G (ibid.) mentions also "leaves of quatrefoil shape" on this font. In Walker (1908). Described in the Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 4, 1953): "The font (early 13th-century) has a square basin carved with sylized floral design; this rests on four small shafts with moulded caps and bases and one large one without either." Described and illustrated in Whiteman (1994): "The 13th-century square font has carved decoration similar to that at Pagham. It rests on a central stem with corner shafts and stands on a platform part of which is a medieval graveslab". Described and illustrated in the CRSBI (2008): "probably early 13thc. in date, but issues from a 12thc. tradition". There is damage to the upper rim at several spots, probably related to the staples of the old cover; this damage is most obvious on the north side of the basin, where a gouge runs all the way down the stone..
