Described in Cox & Harvey (1907) as one of the most interesting of the twenty-nine baptismal fonts of the Norman period in this county that have square bowls. Harrison (1920) reports a square Norman font in this church. Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an early baptismal font consisting of a square basin mounted on a broad central column and four outer colonnettes. The Victoria County History (Sussex, vol. 6, pt. 1, 1980) notes: "Architectural evidence shows that there was a church at Lancing on the present site in the 12th century [...] In 1636 the font no longer held water [...] The 12th-century font has a square bowl on an octagonal central pillar with four circular corner pillars." Described in Whiteman (1994): "The font, a shallow square bowl of marble, is Norman". The CRSBI (2008) notes: "low, square Sussex marble bowl with a circular interior, composed of three horizontal sections, and supported by an octagonal central column and four angle colonnettes on a square plinth. Each face is carved with five rectangular panels. [...] The unusual font is probably late 12thc. in date."
