Church Notes: original church converted into Mosque in 717; re-consecrated as Christian church in 908; re-built 1064, 1312, 1606; notable Romanesque cloister
Dodecagonal mounted baptismal font of the 16th century in the Renaissance style; a large arcade covers the sides of the basin, a figure [saint/Apostle] in each arch; the arches themselves are richly ornamented; the buttresses of the angles are ornate columns with capitals and bases; a narrow band of foliage motif adorns the upper basin sides just below the protruding rim; an inscription runs all around the lower basin side, each figure has a corresponding name under it [e.g.: St. Batholomew - St. Thomas - St. Philip]. The chamfer of the underbowl is ornamented with angels at the angles; their wings extend along the sides; this underbowl is rounded and narrows to a centre ring and a splayed base totally covered in foliage motif. Nadal i Farreras (2002: 117) informs that the font was commissioned in 1535 to the brother of the main master of the Cathedral work, the Provençal Guido de Bonjoc [or Belljoch], but it was finshed only ten years later with the intervention of Joan Roig (540) and Master Tomás (1545) [NB: Barral i Altet (1994: 81) uses the Catalan form "Joan de Belljoc" for the artist]. The font is raised on a splayed polygonal base ornamented chiefly with foliage motif, and partly sunk on the ground, approximately to the level of the centre ring of the base. The flat polygonal lid appears covered in carved leather (?)
