The Architect (issue of 16 August 1873: 81) includes an article on Radnorshire Churches which notes on the Church at Llanbister: "The font is octagonal, of the 13th century type and stands immediately beyong the first step in the nave." Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a baptismal font with a hexagonal basin. This same source (ibid., p. 167) mentions a modern immersion font [not listed in this Index] constructed in Llanbister, and adds that "the explanation of the great preponderance of these fonts in the South Wales district lies in the fact that the Baptists are very strong there, and in the face of Baptist opposition it is thought desirable to emphasise the Church's normal rule for Baptism by 'dipping', as expressed in the rubrics of the Prayer Book."
