Font Notes:
There is an entry for Welborne [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TG0610/welborne/] [accessed 20 January 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "Church is dedicated to All the Saints" and names "Thomas de Hengham." as first recorded rector here, in 1289. The Domesday entry for 'Walebruna' cited in Blomefield (ibid.) mentions neither church nor priest in it. Tyrrell-Green (1928) list the font here as one in a very large group of baptismal fonts that are plain octagonal with straightsided basins; he reports the font in the churchyard [ca. 1928] doing duty as a flower-vase. Noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "Plain, octagonal, embattled." Illustrated in Knott (2006). The font consists of an octagonal basin with very thick and protruding crenellation around the upper rim, and with a moulded underbowl chamfer; on an octagonal stem and plinth; the basin has obviously been re-cut, the crenellation crashing now with the resulting shape. The painted wooden cover is modern, a low-dome base with raised ribs and orb-and-cross finial. [NB: we have no information on the font from the original church here].
