Font Notes:
Blomefield (1805-1810) writes: "The Church of Ryburgh Magna is a rectory, dedicated to St. Andrew", and names "John de Thefford" as first recorded rector, in 1309. The present font is listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as one in a very large group of baptismal fonts that are plain octagonal with straightsided basins. Pevsner & Wilson (1999) mention a font in the context of old tiles: "C14 near the font", but do not note the font itself, usually an indication that it is of a late date. A font is illustrated in Knott (2006), who writes: "magnificent Norman tower arch forming a backdrop to the sparsely decorated Victorian font and 20th century Perp font cover. The bowl has an inscription Except a man be born of water... A royal arms faces east." The basin of the font is, however, medieval, but has been re-carved, probably in the 19th century; the insert repairs around the upper rim of the basin clearly denote the earlier date of the basin. The octagonal pedestal base is decorated with cinquefoil arches or windows on the sides and is probably a Victorian replacement. The modern wooden font is a tall crocketed spire with lower open-work.
