Blomefield (1805-1810) writes; "The Church of Wilton is dedicated to St. James; it has only a nave or body, with a chancel, built of flint and boulder, and covered with reed", and names 'Thomas de la Lee' as the first recorded rector, in 1299. A font in this church is listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as one in a very large group of baptismal fonts that are plain octagonal with straightsided basins [NB: it is not clear whether T-G meant to include two fonts (one at Hockwold and another at Wilton); the town is now Hockwold-cum-Wilton but maintains the two separate churches]. Wilton St. James' has one such font, with slightly tapering sides and much adamaged around the upper rim; the octagonal basin is raised on a pedestal, a splaying lower base and an octagonal plinth, all octagonal and plain. The wooden cover id octagonal and flat, with metal decorations and ring handle; appears modern. [NB: we have no information on the font at Hockwold St. Peter's, the other church in Hockwold-cum-Wilton; the church of St. Peter itself may date back to Anglo-Saxon times]. [NB: there is no mention of this font in Pevsner & Wilson (1999) under either entry]
