There are two entries for Cranworth in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/TF9804/cranworth/] [accessed 25 March 2014], but no mention of a church or cleric in them. Blomefield (1805-1810) reports a church dedicated to St. Mary here, the first reference to which is dated in Edward I's reign [1272-1307]. The present font is listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as one in a very large group of baptismal fonts that are plain octagonal with straightsided basins. Noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1999): "C14, octagonal." Noted and illustrated in Knott (2006). The octagonal basin has plain sides but the underbowl chamfer is decorated with a graded moulding; the upper rim is damaged; the octagonal stem is plain, as is the quadrangular lower base; on a plain octagonal plinth with kneeling stone. The font is located at the west end of the north aisle.
