Listed in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as one in a very large group of baptismal fonts that are plain octagonal with straightsided basins; an inscription on it with the date 1603. Noted in Pevsner (1971): "Font. Plain, octagonal, with an inscription and the small date 1603." Richards (1973) writes: "The octagonal font [...] is inscribed 'William Drinkwater the Keeper 1603' and its pyramidal cover '1595'. At one time the cover has been painted and gilded. In the past there has ben considerable correspondence in archaeological journals about the meaning of the font lettering, and it is reasonable to assume that it implies that Drinkwater was the gamekeeper and agent for the Warburton family." Byrne (2013) writes about this church: "Radiocarbong dating of some of the external and internal woodwork has given a date 1250-1395". The font consists of an octagonal basin with a moulded underbowl, raised on a plain octagonal pedestal base, a rounded lower base and a thin quadragonal plinth; it is now located in the new church.
