The two Domesday entries for "Billingeforda", transcribed and translated in Blomefield (1805-1810) mention neither church nor cleric in it; this author writes: "The Church is a rectory [...] It consists of a nave and a north and south isle, covered with lead, and a chancel with tile, all much out of repair; at the west end is a square tower, on which is raised an octangular one, with 2 bells. [...] Here were the gilds of St. Mary, and the Trinity; to one of these the church was probably dedicated. [...] In the reign of Henry III. the patronage was in the family of Fregoz. [...] And Henry Fregoz occurs rector in the 34th of that King" [i.e., 1250]. This would confirm the building of the church here to between 1086 and 1250. The present font is described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an octagonal mounted baptismal font of the Early English period ornamented with an arcade. Noted in Pevsner & Wilson (1997): "Font. Octagonal, with pretty arcading, and lobed dogtooth in the spandrels, probably of c.1300." [NB: the 'lobed dogtooth" is actually the triquetra symbol]. Illustrated in Knott (2006), who suggests the font may be of an earlier date than the church itself [NB: Pevsner & Wilson (1997) remark also on the chancel piscina as being 13th-century]. The octagonal basin is raised on a central shaft and four angle colonnettes, all with moulded capitals and bases, and a plain octagonal plinth. The font is somewhat crude in the execution of the carved work, as can be gathered from the unevenness of the arcade elements. Wooden cover of four ribs round a centre pivot, on a flat octagonal base; appears modern.
