There is an entry for this Elmstone [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TR2660/elmstone/] [accessed 31 January 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Glynne (1877) writes: "The font has a circular bowl of marble with four projecting figures, on a cylindrical stem surrounded by four legs on a plinth." Listed in Cox & Harvey (1907) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Described in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an early round baptismal font mounted on a central support and four outer colonnettes. In newman (1976): "Font. C12 or C13. Bethersden marble bowl, square below, round at the top, the transition made via anvil-shaped corner pieces. Five shafts." The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TR2614960284] notes: "Parish church. C12, remodelled and extended early C14, restored externally 1878 and generally 1900. [...] Font, C12 or C13, with Bethersden marble bowl, round at top, made square at base by anvil-shaped corner piers. Base of 5 simple shafts." Noted in Leach (1975) as a font made of Purbeck marble: "bowl with slightly rounded sides" [source given: The Revd. K.F. Watts].
