Noted in the 3rd ed. of Hutchins (1973 c1861-1874): "The font is a good Norman circular example, with the cable and other characteristic ornaments around it." In Long (1923) as a baptismal font of the Norman period. Tyrrell-Green (1928) writes: "The handsome Norman font at Chickerel (Dorset) shows a rather more elaborate form of similar adornment [i.e., cable moulding]. A tightening of the girdle of cable moulding contracts the tub-like vessel in the middle, causing it to assume an appearance approaching the cup-like form". In the RCHM (1970). In Newman & Pevsner (1972): "Font. Norman, with modest bands of decoration." In Gerald Duke [www.martinstown.co.uk]. The Dorset Historic Churches Trust [http://dorsethistoricchurchestrust.co.uk] notes "a font dated at about 1150" [NB: this same source mentions "a well preserved stoup" but gives no date for it]. The stem below the lower ornament and the round plinth are both modern. [We are grateful to Gerald Duke of www.martinstown.co.uk, for the information on, and photographs of this font]
