Church Notes: original church 12thC, documented 1110 as a chapel-od-ease to Dour; present church is 16thC re-building; modified 18th, 19th and 20thC;
Théodore Bernier's Dictionnaire géographique, historique, archéologique, biographique & bibliographique du Hainaut (Mons: H. Manceaux, 1879: 62) mentions a "cuve baptismale romane" in the church of Saint-Albin, Blaugies. Described and illustrated in Ronse (1929) as a composite baptismal font: the square basin is plain but has the type of underbowl commonly found in the Tournai fonts; the pedestal base is cylindrical and plain. The lower base volume is actually an ornamented basin of the 12th century inverted to serve as a step-up for this font. The upper basin shows an old cover with the locking mechanism in place in Ronse's illustration. There is an index reference (1930) to vol. IX, p. 501 of the Bulletin des Commissions Royales d'Art et d'Archeologie, related to the font [we are unable at this time to locate the right content in the Bulletin] . Listed in Drake (2002) as a Mosan font. Listed and illustrated in BALaT-KIK-IRPA [http://balat.kikirpa.be/object/10014808] [accessed 16 March 2022] as a stone baptismal font with date 1101-1200; this source does not mention the composite nature of the font. Two font covers are recorded in the above sources: 1) a flat wooden cover one appears with the locking hardware in place in Ronse's reproduction of the photograph by Soil de Moriamé. and in one of the photographs in BALaT KIK-IRPA [cf. ImagesArea]; 2) a metal dome with finial in one of the photographs in BALaT KIK-IRPA [cf. ImageArea]. Noted in Eglise paroissiale Saint-Aubin de Blaugies [https://www.douretsafollehistoire.be/2019/04/25/eglise-paroissiale-saint-aubin-de-blaugies/] [accessed 16 March 2022] as "fonts baptismaux qui datent du XIIe siècle" and does not mention the composite nature of the font either. Similarly described in the Dour commune site [https://www.communedour.be/loisirs/tourisme/historique-de-dour/blaugies] [accessed 16 March 2022]. The blog entry Blaugies autrefois [http://blaugiesautrefois.over-blog.com/2014/12/st-aubin-description-interieure-ses-richesses.html] [accessed 16 March 2014] refers to Bernier's mention of a Romanesque font in his Dictionnaire[...] This same blog entry includes two images of the font, each showing the alternate positions basin-base; the first one shows the foliage decorated basin as base, with the caption: "Cuve baptismale, art roman du 12ème S Cuve munie d'un couvercle en bois dont le pied ressemblerait à une ancienne cuve retournée"; the secod picture shows the basisns reversed and is captioned: "Après restauration, grâce aux techniques modernes de collage de la pierre, la cuve a été remise en position normale", which suggests the 'proper' position basin-vs-base, and does not mention the possibility that the font may instead be a composite.
