A fragment which corresponds to the lower base of a columnar base is included in Ronse (1929: 11n and fig. 12) among baptismal fonts of the 12th century; he describes it as "le soubassement des anciens fonts de Mons"; the visible side has two animals, a lion on the right and a winged quadruped monster on the left, in a fight scene; he reports an inscription on the side [cf. Inscription area]; the name "Lambertus de Tornaco" that appears on this base may have been the carver or commissioner; Ronse suggests that it may refer to Lambert, bishop of Tournai and Noyon ca. 1118. Drake (2001: 47) states that the font at Mons is "no longer thought to be Tournai".
