Country Name: England

Ecclesiastic Region: Diocese of Hereford
Font Location in Church: inside the church, at the W end of the nave
Date: 1667
Century and Period: 17th century(mid), Restoration
Font Notes:
There are two entries for Credenhill [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SO4543/credenhill/] [accessed 12 February 2023]; neither of them mentions cleric or church in it. Described and ilustrated in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as a 17th-century baptismal font "of good traditional outline". The basin is octagonal with a round well; an inscription [cf. Inscription area] naming the donor and the date of the donation appears around the rim side; below it a tiny crenellation pattern all around; the panels of the basin are vertical and ornamented with a large floral motif on each; the rounded underbowl has ribbed pattern all around. The pedestal of the base is octagonal: the upper volume, the often-found central ring, is prominent and octagonal; a thinner stem, also octagonal and plain follows down; the third volume of the base is of the same shape splaying out at the bottom. Described and illustrated in the inventory of Herefordshire (1931-1934, vol. II: 65 and pl. 56). [NB: the reference to the old bowl from Eaton Bishop old bowl cannot refer to this one, since the former is supposed to be from the 13th century, while the original 13th-century base of the Eaton Bishop church is still in its original location [cf. Index entry for Eaton Bishop No. 1] holding up a modern bowl]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO4502943883] notes: "Parish church. C12 nave, chancel arch c1200, chancel 1300, C14 west tower, C15 south porch, restoration of 1861 and 1876 [...] Font dated 1667 with inscription, the gift of John Squier of Colford, moulded base and stem, cylindrical bowl with fluting and rosettes, bread and reel mouldings below capping."
