Suckling (1846-1848) writes: "Between the north and south doors of the nave stands a good octangular font, bearing in its sculptured panels the emblems of the Evangelists. Near the base is an inscription in old English character, cut in the stone, but much mutilated. I think, however, the following is a correct reading of the legend. '+Orate pro aia dni Johis Casteli plectoris ecclie de Norvic qui fecit fieri hnc fonte baptism'" [abbreviation signs not reproduced here]. Described and illustrated in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an octagonal mounted baptismal font of the Perpendicular period; the panels of the basin have demi-angels holding up shields bearing coats-of arms (one of these is identified in this same source as the arms of Betelot "sable, 3 gants argent trimmed and tasselled or") (ibid.); the other panels have sedente lions; the first chamfer of the underbowl has cherubs at the angles spreading their wings over the sides; the lower chamfer has four-petal flowers. The square pedestal has buttresses at the angles and sedente linos on ledges at the sides. Noted in Parker (1855) as Perpendicular. Betjeman (1958) mentions a beautifully decorated beam that supports the font cover. Listed in Cautley (1982) as 15th-century font bearing an inscription.
