Harrison (1920) notes: "This fine cruciform church is mainly Tr[ansitional]-Nor[man]", and gives the dates of three restorations thoughout the 19th century; he does not mention a font in it. A font is listed and illustrated in Tyrrell-Green (1928) as an octagonal mounted baptismal font of the Perpendicular period; each panel of the basin has a large quatrefoil in a circle; the eight panels of the chamfer appear to have heads and/or symbols on them. The sides of the octagonal pedestal base have a trefoil window in each. Plain octagonal plinth. English Heritage, however, [www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/en-302233-church-of-st-mary-west-sussex] [accessed 14 December 2012] states: "The octagonal late-C15 style stone font is a modern reproduction." The present font may be an original of the late-15th century re-tooled at a later date. [NB: we have no information on the font of the earlier church here].
